Is the black mold behind my son's toys dangerous?« Back to Previous Page
|
My 4-year-old son has been having a persistent cough and runny nose for the last couple of weeks, and we can't figure out why. I just pulled his stuffed animals out of the corner of his bedroom in our Jumeirah villa and found a patch of black spots on the wall behind the cupboard where they were kept. I'm really worried this is the cause. What's the safest and fastest way to deal with this mold to protect my kids?

Based on your description, the situation warrants immediate attention. The black spots you discovered are highly likely to be mold, a significant concern given your son's respiratory symptoms. In the UAE's climate, especially in coastal areas like Jumeirah, high humidity and year-round air conditioning create a perfect environment for mold growth. Condensation often forms on and behind furniture placed against exterior walls, which are cooler.
While not all black mold is the infamous Stachybotrys chartarum, any mold proliferation indoors is unacceptable and a health hazard, particularly for children. Mycotoxins and mold spores can cause persistent coughing, runny nose, headaches, and allergic reactions. Disturbing it, even by moving the toys, can aerosolize these spores, exacerbating the problem. For the safety of your family, I strongly advise against attempting a DIY cleanup. Improper handling can spread the contamination throughout your villa. The safest and fastest approach is a professional inspection and remediation. In Dubai, this is regulated by Dubai Municipality guidelines (e.g., Public Health & Safety Department), which professionals follow to ensure complete removal and prevention. A certified inspector will conduct air and surface sampling to identify the species and spore count, assess the moisture source (likely a condensation issue), and contain the area before safe, thorough remediation and hygienization.
