Is the black mold in my closet making me sick?« Back to Previous Page

Our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been so humid since the last sandstorm and rain a few weeks ago. I’ve started getting these awful headaches and a constant stuffy nose that I never had before, and I just found a patch of black, fuzzy spots in the corner of my bedroom closet behind some shoes. Could this mold be the reason I’ve been feeling so unwell, and what’s the first thing I should do about it?

Black mold can absolutely cause the symptoms you're describing. Headaches, nasal congestion, and sinus irritation are common reactions to mold exposure, especially in a consistently humid environment like JVC post-rain. The recent spike in humidity created ideal conditions for mold growth in enclosed spaces like closets.
The first step is to limit your exposure. Seal off the closet and avoid disturbing the area, as this can release more spores into the air. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can carefully clean it with a vinegar solution while wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, given your health symptoms, the mold may be more widespread inside the wall or under flooring. In Dubai’s climate, where air conditioning runs year-round, hidden condensation behind walls is a frequent source of mold that DIY cleaning can’t address. A professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is the most reliable way to find the moisture source and assess the full extent. They can also take an air or surface sample for lab analysis to confirm the mold type and concentration, which is crucial for understanding your health risk and ensuring the remediation plan is effective. Addressing the underlying humidity issue with a dehumidifier or HVAC adjustment is essential to prevent it from returning. |
