Is the black mold in my house toxic?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled their wooden toy chest away from the wall in our spare room and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading behind it, probably from a slow leak I didn't know about. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and the humidity has been awful lately. **Could this be the toxic black mold I keep hearing about and is it dangerous for my family to stay in the house?**

The term "toxic black mold" usually refers to Stachybotrys chartarum, but many black-colored molds are not that specific type. In Dubai's high humidity, the most common black molds found indoors are Cladosporium or Aspergillus niger, which are irritants but not the extreme toxin-producer people fear.

Regardless of the species, any significant mold growth behind furniture indicates a moisture problem that needs immediate attention. For your children's persistent coughing, the mold is very likely a primary irritant. Mold spores act as a constant allergen, irritating airways and worsening respiratory symptoms, especially in children. The combination of our high outdoor humidity and year-round AC use can create perfect conditions for this if there's a hidden leak, as the AC re-circulates the spores.

Do not attempt to clean a large patch yourself, as disturbing it will release a massive amount of spores. The first step is to identify and stop the moisture source—likely a leak in the wall or condensation from an AC line. For a confirmed assessment, a professional inspection with air and surface sampling is recommended. The samples are sent to a microbiology lab to identify the exact species, which is the only way to know the potential risk level and guide the proper remediation method.

Until a professional can assess, increase ventilation in the room by opening windows (when outdoor humidity is lower) and use a dehumidifier. Keep the children out of that room and consider relocating them if their symptoms persist. The Dubai Municipality has guidelines for indoor air quality, and proper remediation by a certified company should follow standards like those from the IICRC to ensure it's done completely.
