Is the mold behind my kids' toy chest dangerous?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since the holidays ended, and I’m starting to panic. I pulled their wooden toy chest away from the wall in their bedroom and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading behind it, probably from the last time we ran the humidifier too much. I’ve cleaned it with bleach but the smell is still there. What’s the safest way to make sure it’s completely gone and not affecting their health?

It depends on the species, but any black mold growth in a child's bedroom is a significant concern and the cause for their coughing is very plausible. The humidifier created a perfect microclimate for it to thrive behind the furniture. In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue where localized humidity from appliances meets cooler wall surfaces from AC, creating condensation that mold spores exploit.

Bleach is not recommended for porous surfaces like drywall or wood. It only bleaches the visible colour and does not kill the root system (hyphae) penetrating the material, which is why the musty smell persists. This indicates the mold is still active. For a patch you describe as "huge," the safest approach is professional remediation. They will assess the extent of the damage, which often goes deeper into the wall than is visible.

The immediate steps are to keep the toy chest away from the wall, stop using the humidifier in that room, and increase ventilation. To properly identify the mold type and its potential health impacts, a lab test is necessary. This is particularly important with ongoing child health symptoms, as it provides a definitive answer on the risk level. A professional inspection can also identify the exact moisture source to prevent recurrence, which is critical in a humid climate.
