Is the mold behind my wardrobe dangerous?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and we can't figure out why. I finally pulled out the wardrobe in our master bedroom and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold covering the entire wall behind it, right where the AC vent is. We've lived in this Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed this. Could this mold be the reason for our constant respiratory issues and how dangerous is it?

Yes, the mold behind your wardrobe is dangerous and is very likely the cause of your family's persistent respiratory issues. The constant coughing is a classic symptom of exposure to mold spores, which are being circulated every time your AC unit turns on. The wall behind the wardrobe is a textbook mold hotspot in Dubai villas; it's a cold surface from the AC vent that meets the humid, stagnant air trapped by the furniture, creating massive condensation that mold thrives on.

You should treat this as a serious contamination. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as disturbing it will release a massive cloud of spores throughout your home. The first step is a professional inspection to assess the full extent, as the growth is likely inside the wall cavity and possibly in your AC ductwork. In Dubai, proper remediation involves containment of the area, HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, removal of contaminated porous materials like drywall, and addressing the moisture source—in this case, likely insufficient insulation on the cold wall and the airflow blockage from the furniture.

For verification, a lab analysis can identify the species, which is important for health context. Stachybotrys chartarum (the most notorious "black mold") is less common here, but other black-colored species like Aspergillus niger are frequently identified in such scenarios and are significant respiratory irritants.

Moving forward, keep the wardrobe pulled away from the wall, ensure the AC drain line is not blocked and is properly discharging, and consider having a professional assess your villa's ventilation to prevent recurrence. This is a structural humidity issue common in older Jumeirah villas, not just a surface cleaning problem.
