Is the mold causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the last two weeks and I'm starting to worry. I just pulled our winter clothes out of the master bedroom closet in our Mirdif villa and found a bunch of jackets and sweaters with fuzzy black spots on them. I know it's humid here, but how serious is this and do I need to call someone to deal with it right away, or can it wait until the weekend?

Based on your description, the situation you've described in your Mirdif villa is a serious indoor air quality concern that requires immediate professional attention. The fuzzy black spots on your winter clothes are a clear indicator of active mold growth, which is a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity levels, especially when seasonal items are stored in closets that can become microclimates for condensation.

It is highly probable that the mold is contributing to, if not directly causing, your children's persistent cough. Mold spores are microscopic allergens and irritants. When disturbed—such as when pulling clothes out of a closet—they become airborne and are easily inhaled. This can lead to respiratory issues, coughing, wheezing, and other allergic reactions, particularly in children whose immune systems are still developing.

This is not an issue to delay until the weekend. The presence of visible growth on porous materials like textiles suggests a significant colony, and the spores will have already contaminated the air in the bedroom and likely the HVAC system. DIY cleaning with bleach or vinegar is ineffective for porous materials and can actually aerosolize more spores, worsening the problem.

You need a certified professional inspection immediately. In the UAE, reputable companies like Saniservice follow strict assessment and remediation protocols. A certified inspector will conduct air quality testing to identify the spore types and concentration levels, perform a moisture survey to find the source of the humidity (often a small AC leak or insulation issue in villas), and provide a detailed remediation plan.

For the health of your family, I strongly recommend you call for a professional assessment. Contact Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection. They can determine the full extent of the contamination and safely remediate it to restore your indoor air quality.
