Is the mold from last month's rain harmful?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rains last month, I noticed a musty smell and some discoloration on the ceiling of my son’s bedroom. The AC in the apartment seems to cycle on and off more frequently than usual, and now my kids have been coughing and sneezing a lot lately. Could this be due to mold? What should we do to prevent it from spreading further?

The musty smell and discoloration on your son's bedroom ceiling could indeed be indicative of mold growth following the heavy rains. In dubai, such conditions are common post-rain events due to high humidity levels and temperature variations.

Mold spores in the air can settle on surfaces like ceilings, walls, or even fabrics where moisture is present—especially if there have been any leaks from rainwater. The musty odour is a tell-tale sign of mold growth, as well as the discoloration which may appear dark green, black, or brown and often has a slimy texture.

The increased cycling of your AC could be due to the higher humidity levels caused by the wet weather, which necessitates more frequent dehumidification. This condition can indeed exacerbate mold growth if not addressed properly. The coughing and sneezing experienced by your children might also indicate an allergic reaction to mold spores.

To prevent further spread of mold in your apartment:

1. Inspect: Conduct a thorough inspection of affected areas using moisture meters, which are available locally at home improvement stores or through professional services. Look for signs of water damage or condensation that can lead to mold growth.
2. Dehumidify: Use dehumidifiers to reduce the humidity level in your apartment. In hot and humid conditions, maintaining a relative humidity below 60% is recommended to inhibit mold growth.
3. Clean: Thoroughly clean affected areas with a mixture of water and detergent or a solution containing bleach (if safe for the surface). Be cautious when using bleach; ensure proper ventilation and follow safety guidelines.
4. Dry: Ensure that all surfaces are thoroughly dried after cleaning. In some cases, professional equipment like air movers and dehumidifiers may be necessary to completely dry out damp areas.
5. Seal: Apply mold-resistant sealants or paints to prevent future moisture absorption in walls and ceilings.

Given the specific conditions in dubai, it is advisable to consult with a certified environmental inspector who can assess your situation and provide tailored recommendations based on local regulations and standards. In case of serious cases, professional remediation services are recommended to ensure thorough cleaning and proper containment.
