Is the mold in my bedroom causing allergies?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for two years and just noticed a patch of black spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom, behind the wardrobe. My husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose and itchy eyes for months, and we can't figure out why. The problem seems worse since the weather got more humid. Could this be mold causing his allergies, and how do we find out for sure?

The black spots behind your wardrobe and your husband's symptoms are very likely connected, especially given Dubai's high humidity and the timing of his allergy-like symptoms. Bedroom mold, often from condensation or hidden moisture, is a common trigger for the exact issues you're describing—stuffy nose, itchy eyes, and worsening allergies upon waking.

To find out for sure, a professional inspection is your best course of action. In a villa, the problem is often more complex than the visible patch; the source could be a small plumbing leak in the wall, condensation from an AC duct, or moisture wicking from the slab foundation. An expert will use tools like a moisture meter and borescope to assess the wall's internal condition and identify the full extent. They should also take air and surface samples for lab analysis to identify the specific mold type, as some species are more likely to cause allergic reactions than others.

Until you can get an inspection, improve ventilation in the room by running an exhaust fan or opening windows when outdoor humidity is lower. Keep the AC running to help control humidity, but ensure the condensate drain line is not blocked, as this can be a hidden moisture source. Do not attempt to clean it with bleach, as this can aggravate the spores and worsen air quality without addressing the root moisture problem.
