Is the mold in my closet causing my allergies?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet has had a damp, earthy smell ever since the heavy rains in Al Quoz a couple of months back. I’ve started waking up with a stuffy nose and itchy eyes, and I just found a few small black spots on the back wall behind my shoes. Is this definitely mold, and what’s the best way to get a proper inspection done to see if it's causing our allergies?

Based on your description of the damp, earthy smell, visible black spots, and the onset of allergy symptoms (stuffy nose, itchy eyes), there is a very high probability that you are dealing with a mold infestation in your closet. The heavy rains in Al Quoz likely led to water intrusion, and the subsequent Dubai humidity and constant use of AC create the perfect environment for mold to thrive behind walls and in enclosed spaces where condensation occurs.

The symptoms you describe are classic indicators of mold exposure. Mycotoxins and spores released by mold colonies, particularly types like Cladosporium or Stachybotrys (often appearing as black spots), are potent allergens and irritants. Simply cleaning the visible spots is not sufficient, as the underlying moisture problem and hidden growth within the wall cavity are the true source.

For a definitive answer, a professional inspection is absolutely necessary. In the UAE, proper mold assessment involves more than a visual check; it includes using moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to find the source of dampness, and air or surface sampling to identify the specific mold species and concentration levels. This is critical to develop an effective remediation plan and to confirm if the mold is the cause of your allergies.
