Is the mold in my Dubai villa making my child sick?« Back to Previous Page

Our family room in our villa in Jumeirah, the one with the small ensuite, has started to feel really damp ever since the weather got humid a few weeks ago. I’ve just noticed a few black speckles in the corner behind the sofa where my kids play, and my youngest has had a persistent cough I can’t shake. Could this mold be making him sick, and who should I call to properly check and clean it in Dubai?

Based on your description of a damp family room, visible black speckles, and your child's persistent cough in your Jumeirah villa, there is a strong probability that the mold is a contributing factor to the health symptoms. In the UAE's high humidity climate, especially during the summer months, condensation forms readily on cooler surfaces like exterior walls and behind furniture, creating the perfect environment for mold growth. The species commonly found in such conditions, like Cladosporium or Aspergillus, are known respiratory irritants. Children, with their developing immune systems, are particularly susceptible, and exposure can manifest as coughing, wheezing, throat irritation, and other allergic reactions.

A DIY approach is not recommended. Disturbing the mold without proper containment can aerosolize the spores, spreading the contamination and increasing exposure. This requires a professional inspection and remediation protocol. In Dubai, reputable companies follow international guidelines (IICRC S520) adapted for local conditions.

A certified inspector will conduct a thorough assessment, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to identify the exact species and the moisture source—which could be a hidden leak, rising damp, or condensation from AC units. The remediation process involves advanced containment, HEPA filtration, and specialized antimicrobial treatments to ensure complete removal, not just surface cleaning.
