Is the mold in my villa a health risk for my toddler?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Jumeirah has felt really humid since the heavy rain a few weeks back. I’ve just pulled a sofa away from the wall in the downstairs living room and found a patch of black and green mold, about the size of a dinner plate, spreading from the skirting board. I’m worried about my toddler playing in that room. How urgent is it to get this professionally cleaned, and is it a health risk we need to leave the house for?

Based on your description, this is a situation that requires immediate professional attention. The combination of a recent water intrusion event (the heavy rain), high humidity, and visible mold growth of that size on a structural component like the skirting board is a significant concern.

For your toddler, the health risk is elevated. Children, especially toddlers, have developing respiratory systems and are more susceptible to the effects of mold exposure, which can include allergic reactions (sneezing, runny nose, red eyes), asthma exacerbation, and other respiratory infections. The fact that it was hidden behind furniture allowed spores to accumulate and potentially be disturbed into the air when you moved the sofa.

In the UAE's climate, this type of hidden growth can spread rapidly into the wall cavity and subflooring, compromising structural elements like drywall and insulation. DIY cleaning with bleach is not recommended as it often only addresses the surface discoloration and can exacerbate the problem by adding moisture.

We strongly recommend you schedule a professional inspection and air quality test immediately. Our certified inspectors can identify the full extent of the moisture source and the spread of the colonization, which is almost certainly worse than what is visible. Based on Dubai Municipality guidelines for healthy housing, remediation should be performed by trained professionals using containment and air scrubbing equipment to prevent cross-contamination.

Until the assessment, try to restrict access to that room and avoid disturbing the mold further. For a case involving a child, we often recommend temporary relocation during the aggressive remediation phase for their safety.
