Is the mold in my villa dangerous for my kids??« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Al Barsha has had a persistent damp smell in the kids' bedrooms since the heavy rains in January, especially around the windows. My youngest has been waking up with a stuffy nose and a cough that clears up a few hours after we leave the house for the day. I’ve just pulled back the corner of the carpet and found a few small black patches underneath. How dangerous is this kind of mold for children, and should I take them to a doctor for testing right away?

The damp smell and visible black patches under the carpet are strong indicators of a moisture issue, likely from water intrusion during the January rains or from condensation around the window frames, which is common in Dubai's climate. For children, this type of mold exposure primarily manifests as the symptoms you've described: nasal congestion, coughing, and irritation that often improve when away from the affected environment.

While many common household molds are not acutely toxic, they are allergenic and can significantly aggravate respiratory conditions. The risk is higher for children due to their developing systems and lower body weight. The persistent nature of the symptoms, directly linked to being in that room, means the environment is the likely culprit.

You should consult a pediatrician and inform them of the potential mold exposure. They can assess your child and determine if any specific allergy testing is warranted. Do not attempt to clean this yourself, as disturbing it will release a large number of spores into the air. The carpet and underlying padding likely need to be removed to properly assess and remediate the source of the moisture and the extent of the mold growth.

A professional inspection is recommended to identify the exact moisture source—be it a leak, capillary action from the slab, or condensation—and to conduct air and surface sampling. This identifies the species present and the concentration levels, which is critical for determining the appropriate remediation strategy and for verifying that the environment is safe again after cleanup. In villas, this often requires addressing thermal bridging at windows and ensuring AC systems are balanced to reduce humidity and condensation.
