Is the mold in our villa causing our allergies?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah Park villa for two years and just noticed a large patch of black mold in the back of the wardrobe on the ground floor. Since last week, my husband and I have both had constant stuffy noses and itchy eyes that seem to clear up when we go to the office. Could this mold be the cause of our allergy-like symptoms, or is it just a coincidence?

It's very likely the mold is causing your symptoms, especially given the timing and that you both feel better when away from the villa. The black patch in your wardrobe is a strong visual indicator of a moisture issue, and the consistent symptoms you describe—stuffy noses and itchy eyes—are classic reactions to mold exposure.

In Dubai's climate, ground-floor areas are particularly susceptible to mold due to high humidity and a phenomenon called rising damp, where moisture from the soil is absorbed into the walls. Year-round AC use can also create significant condensation if units are not properly maintained or are incorrectly sized for the space, providing the perfect damp environment for mold to thrive behind walls and in enclosed spaces like wardrobes.

For a situation of this scale, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. DIY cleaning of a large patch often only addresses the surface you can see, not the root moisture problem or hidden growth within the wall. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the source of the water intrusion and assess the full extent. They should also take an air or surface sample for lab analysis to identify the mold species, which helps determine the appropriate remediation strategy and confirms the link to your health concerns. This evidence-based approach is the best way to resolve the problem permanently and ensure your home's air quality is restored.
