Is the mold on my wall dangerous for my kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and I just pulled their large wooden wardrobe away from the wall in our Deira apartment. The back of it and the wall behind are covered in a scary-looking black and green fuzzy patch. We run the AC constantly but it feels damp. How urgent is it that I get this professionally removed, and can I just clean it myself with bleach?

Based on your description, the situation is likely urgent and requires professional assessment. The combination of visible, widespread growth and your children's persistent coughing are strong indicators of an active moisture problem that needs to be addressed correctly.

In Dubai's climate, the constant AC use can create significant condensation if the unit is not draining properly or if the room's humidity isn't controlled. This trapped moisture behind large furniture like wardrobes is a very common source of mold in Deira apartments. The black and green fuzzy patch suggests a potentially mixed colony, which could include species that produce irritants or allergens known to aggravate respiratory systems, especially in children.

Cleaning it yourself with bleach is not recommended. Bleach only removes surface discoloration on non-porous surfaces; it does not kill the root structure of mold penetrating porous materials like drywall or wood. It can also release a large number of spores and harmful fumes into the air during scrubbing, potentially worsening your kids' symptoms. The underlying cause—the dampness—must be identified and resolved, or the mold will return.

The most effective approach is a professional inspection to identify the moisture source (e.g., a condensation leak, rising damp, or an AC issue) and conduct proper remediation. This involves containment to prevent spore spread, safe removal of contaminated porous materials, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment. For verification, a post-remediation test can confirm the air quality is safe. Given the health symptoms, addressing this properly is a priority for your family's indoor health.
