Is this AC mold a health emergency needing immediate professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been leaking a little onto the carpet for maybe two weeks, and now I’m seeing a few small black spots spreading out from the wall near the unit. We’ve been waking up with stuffy noses and I’m worried it's getting worse. How quickly do I need to get a professional in to handle this before it becomes a major health hazard?

That leak and the black spots are a significant concern and warrant immediate attention. In Dubai's climate, with high humidity and year-round AC use, a water leak creates the perfect environment for mold to proliferate rapidly. The stuffy noses you're experiencing are a common reaction to mold spores in the air, and prolonged exposure can escalate respiratory issues, especially for children or those with asthma or allergies.

You should have a professional inspection within the next few days. The priority is to stop the moisture source—an AC technician needs to fix the leak immediately to prevent further damage. For the mold itself, a certified inspector can assess the extent of the growth, which may have spread into the wall cavity or carpet underlay. Surface cleaning alone is often insufficient.

A proper remediation plan involves containment to prevent spore spread during cleaning, removal of unsalvageable porous materials like saturated drywall or carpet padding, and HEPA vacuuming of affected areas. The final step should always be post-remediation verification, often through air or surface sampling, to confirm spore counts have returned to a safe level. This science-driven approach is the only way to ensure the issue is resolved and your indoor air quality is restored.
