Is this AC mold dangerous for my toddler?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in our bedroom has been leaking a little bit onto the carpet for a couple of weeks, and now I’ve pulled the corner back to find a patch of black and green fuzzy stuff on the concrete underneath. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, and I'm worried about my toddler who plays on the floor. Is this the dangerous kind of black mold I hear about, or is it something else common in Dubai's humidity?

Based on your description, what you're seeing is almost certainly active microbial growth, and yes, it is a significant concern, especially with a toddler in the home. The combination of a chronic water leak from the AC and Dubai's high ambient humidity creates the perfect environment for mold.
The black and green fuzzy appearance indicates a colony that's well-established. While the infamous "black mold" (Stachybotrys chartarum) is less common in AC systems compared to other types like Aspergillus or Cladosporium, ALL mold growth in a living space is problematic for indoor air quality. For a toddler who is closer to the floor and has a developing respiratory system, exposure to the spores released by this colony can lead to allergic reactions, coughing, wheezing, or exacerbate conditions like asthma. The first step is to stop the moisture source. Have an HVAC technician repair the AC leak immediately. Do not attempt to clean this yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize the spores and make the situation worse. The carpet and underlying padding likely need to be removed and disposed of professionally to prevent cross-contamination. Given the extent of the growth and the health risk to your child, a professional inspection and assessment are strongly recommended. We need to determine the spore type and concentration in the air your family is breathing. Our certified inspectors follow UAE standards for indoor environmental quality and can provide a detailed remediation protocol.
