Is this bedroom wall mold dangerous in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the corner of our bedroom wall where the wardrobe is. It's on the wall that faces the outside of the building, and it’s gotten much worse since the heavy humidity last week. Is this dangerous black mold, or just regular condensation mildew, and who in Dubai do I even call to get it properly tested and removed?

Based on the description, what you're seeing is a fungal growth likely caused by chronic condensation, a common issue in Dubai due to the high ambient humidity interacting with cold surfaces. The wall where the wardrobe is placed against an external surface is a classic cold bridge, where the outside heat meets your interior AC-cooled wall, creating persistent dampness.
While the term "black mold" is often used for Stachybotrys chartarum, which can produce mycotoxins, visual identification is unreliable. Many dark-colored molds, like Cladosporium or Aspergillus niger, are common here and can still pose health risks, especially for those with allergies, asthma, or compromised immune systems. The rapid spread after a humid period confirms an active moisture problem that must be addressed. In the UAE, remediation must adhere to strict standards like the Abu Dhabi EHSMS and DM's building codes. DIY cleaning with bleach is not recommended as it often fails to address the root moisture issue and can exacerbate spore release. For a growth of this nature, a professional inspection is non-negotiable. A certified inspector will conduct air and surface sampling to identify the species and concentration, assess the moisture source (likely interstitial condensation), and provide a scope for proper remediation. This involves containment, HEPA filtration, antimicrobial application, and, crucially, correcting the thermal bridging or insulation flaw to prevent recurrence. For proper testing and guaranteed remediation, you should call a certified provider like Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. They are equipped to handle the inspection and remediation in full compliance with local regulations. |
