Is this black mold a DIY job in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been leaking a little, and now we have these black speckles spreading on the wall behind the headboard. It’s been getting worse since the weather got really humid a couple of weeks ago. My husband thinks we can just scrub it with bleach ourselves, but I'm worried it's inside the wall. Is this a DIY job or should we call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

Based on the symptoms you've described—black speckles originating from an AC leak, spreading on an interior wall, and accelerating with the recent high humidity—this is not a DIY job and requires immediate professional attention.

The leaking AC unit has almost certainly introduced moisture into the interstitial wall cavity. The visible growth on the surface is merely the tip of the iceberg; a significant colonization is likely occurring inside the wall, on the back of the drywall, and within the insulation. Scrubbing the surface with bleach is ineffective and potentially hazardous. Bleach does not penetrate porous materials like drywall or concrete, meaning it fails to address the root problem. Furthermore, it can aggravate the mold, causing it to release more spores into your indoor air, and the fumes are dangerous in an enclosed bedroom environment.

In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and year-round AC use create perfect conditions for microbial growth, improper remediation can lead to rapid and extensive recurrence. The situation demands a professional inspection, including moisture mapping and possibly borescope inspection, to assess the full extent of the damage behind the wall. Remediation will involve controlled containment of the area, HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and the safe removal of contaminated porous materials.

For a proper assessment and lasting solution, I strongly recommend contacting a certified mold remediation specialist.
