Is this black mold a serious issue needing a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It's on the wall that faces the outside and seems worse since the humidity spiked last week. I'm worried it's spreading but not sure if it's a quick fix I can do with bleach or if this is something bigger that requires a professional. How can I tell if this is a serious problem that needs expert help?

Black mold growth on an exterior wall in Dubai is almost always a symptom of a moisture problem, not just a surface issue you can wipe away. The recent humidity spike likely exacerbated it, but the core cause is probably condensation from the AC meeting the warm wall or a minor leak.
For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it with a vinegar solution (more effective than bleach on porous surfaces like drywall) while wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, this is only a temporary fix if the moisture source remains. The wall cavity behind could already be contaminated. Given its location on an exterior wall, this is likely a serious issue requiring a professional. The Dubai climate, with its high humidity and constant AC use, creates perfect conditions for mold to thrive inside walls where you can't see it. Spores can spread through the AC system to other rooms. A certified inspector uses moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden water source and extent of the growth. They can take a sample for lab analysis to confirm the mold type, which is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol. DIY attempts often disturb the colony, causing a much wider release of spores. If the area is larger than a square foot, you notice a persistent musty odor, or the mold returns after cleaning, you should get a professional assessment. |
