Is this black mold affecting my child's health?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled patches spreading along the corner where the bedroom wall meets the ceiling. It’s behind the wardrobe so we never saw it before. I’m really worried because my youngest has had a runny nose and a cough that won’t go away for the last month. Is this definitely black mold and what’s the safest way to get it professionally removed here in Dubai?

The black speckled patches you describe are very likely mold, given Dubai's high humidity and the condensation that can form on cold surfaces like AC-chilled walls and ceilings. While the term "black mold" is often used for Stachybotrys, many dark-colored molds can cause similar health effects, especially in children.

Your child's persistent respiratory symptoms are a significant concern and should be taken seriously. Mold exposure is a common irritant that can exacerbate allergies, cause congestion, and lead to a lingering cough in sensitive individuals. The location behind the wardrobe is a classic spot for hidden mold growth due to lack of air circulation.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself, as disturbing it can release a large number of spores into the bedroom air. The safest approach is a professional inspection and remediation. In Dubai, look for a provider that conducts a thorough assessment, including moisture mapping to find the source (like a possible condensation issue or hidden leak), and can provide lab analysis to identify the mold species.

Reputable remediators will follow strict containment protocols, using physical barriers and negative air pressure to prevent cross-contamination, and will employ HEPA filtration to clean the air. They should also verify the success of the cleanup with post-remediation testing, not just a visual inspection. This science-driven approach is crucial for ensuring the environment is safe for your family.
