Is this black mold and what should I do first?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots spreading along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. It's right behind the headboard and we didn't see it until we moved the bed. The room has felt damp lately, even with the AC on. **Is this dangerous black mold and what’s the first thing I should do before calling a professional?**

The term "black mold" is often used for Stachybotrys chartarum, but many dark-colored molds look similar. In Dubai's climate, high humidity and condensation from constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold growth behind furniture or in corners with poor airflow.

Your first step is to limit exposure. Avoid disturbing the area, as this can release spores. Move the bed away and do not attempt to scrub it. For a small patch (under one square meter), you can carefully clean it with a detergent solution, but this is a temporary measure if the moisture source isn't fixed. The persistent damp feeling suggests a larger issue, like high humidity or a hidden condensation leak from the AC unit.

Given its location and spread, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the species and the root moisture cause. In the UAE, remediation should follow DM/DHA guidelines, which require containment and proper disposal for affected areas larger than 10 square feet. They will use moisture meters to find the source and recommend solutions, which may include improving ventilation or addressing AC condensate drain issues. The goal is to fix the water problem first, then safely remove the growth.
