Is this black mold and who removes it in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind all the clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of the building. I'm really worried because my husband has started sneezing a lot more lately. Is this dangerous black mold and who should I call to get it properly removed in Dubai?

Black spots in a closet on an exterior wall are a classic sign of condensation-related mould growth, which is extremely common in Dubai's climate. The constant switching between high outdoor humidity and dry, air-conditioned interiors causes moisture to form on cooler surfaces, like that exterior wall. The colour alone cannot confirm if it's the notorious 'black mould' (Stachybotrys); many common moulds like Cladosporium or Aspergillus appear black and can cause the increased sneezing and irritation your husband is experiencing.
For a case like this, you need two separate professionals. First, call a reputable mould inspection company that uses a certified indoor environmental professional to conduct air and surface sampling. This is critical—they should send samples to an accredited microbiology lab to identify the species and concentration, which determines the proper remediation method. Avoid any company that offers to both test and remediate the same job, as this is a conflict of interest. Once you have the lab report, hire a dedicated mould remediation contractor. In Dubai, look for companies whose technicians are certified by a recognized body like the IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification). The proper process involves containment of the area, HEPA filtration, physical removal of contaminated materials, and treatment of the underlying cause—which often requires a separate HVAC specialist to address the humidity and condensation issue. The Dubai Municipality has guidelines on indoor air quality that reputable firms follow. Until the inspection, you can carefully wipe the visible spots with a diluted vinegar solution, but ensure you wear a mask and gloves. More importantly, move all clothing away from that wall and improve air circulation in the closet to prevent further spread. The sneezing is a clear indicator that mould spores are airborne in your bedroom. |
