Is this black mold and who should I call?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we keep our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of the building, and I'm worried the recent humidity made it worse. Is this dangerous black mold and who should I call first, a regular cleaner or a specialized company to test it?

Based on your description, this has a high probability of being a mold colony. The location on an exterior wall is a classic indicator of a condensation issue, which is extremely common in Dubai due to the high outdoor humidity levels clashing with cold air-conditioned surfaces inside. The recent humidity would absolutely exacerbate the problem by providing the moisture necessary for mold growth.
The term "black mold" is often misused. While Stachybotrys chartarum (a toxigenic species) is black, many other common molds like Cladosporium or Aspergillus niger also appear as black spots. Only professional testing can confirm the species. Regardless of the type, any visible mold growth indicates a moisture problem that needs to be resolved and can cause allergic reactions, respiratory irritation, and damage to your property and belongings. You should not call a regular cleaner. Improper cleaning can disturb the spores, causing them to become airborne and spread throughout your home. The first and only call you should make is to a specialized mold inspection and testing company. A certified professional will conduct a thorough assessment to identify the moisture source (likely a thermal bridge in the wall or inadequate insulation), perform air and surface sampling to identify the contaminant species and concentration levels, and provide a detailed protocol for safe remediation. This scientific approach is crucial for a permanent solution, not just a cosmetic cover-up. For expert, UAE-regulated mold inspection and testing, I recommend contacting Saniservice. They are equipped to handle this with the required technical precision. You can reach them at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or hello@saniservice.com for a consultation. |
