Is this black mold behind my wardrobe dangerous?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I’m starting to suspect the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived in this Jumeirah Park villa for two years and never had an issue until after that unusually heavy dew last month. Is this something I can identify and clean myself with bleach, or is it time to call in a professional mold inspection company?

Based on your description, the black spots behind the wardrobe are highly likely to be mold, and the persistent cough in your children is a significant health concern that should not be ignored. In the UAE's humid climate, especially after periods of heavy dew, condensation forms on cooler surfaces like external walls. When furniture is placed against these walls, it creates a stagnant, damp microclimate ideal for mold growth.

While some molds are more problematic than others, the genus Stachybotrys chartarum, commonly called "black mold," is toxigenic and particularly hazardous. Its spores can cause chronic respiratory issues, coughing, headaches, and allergic reactions, especially in children and immunocompromised individuals. However, visual identification is impossible; only laboratory analysis of a sample can confirm the species and its potential danger.

Using bleach is strongly discouraged. It is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall, as it only bleaches the surface pigment and does not kill the roots (hyphae). More critically, attempting to clean it yourself will aggressively disturb the colony, aerosolizing a high concentration of spores and mycotoxins throughout your home, potentially worsening your family's exposure and symptoms.

Given the health symptoms and the concealed location, this requires professional assessment. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and air/surface sampling to determine the moisture source, extent of contamination, and species type. This is crucial for designing an effective remediation plan that addresses the root cause to prevent recurrence, a vital step in Dubai's environment.

For the safety of your family, we recommend you cease use of the room and contact a professional immediately. Call Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive inspection and expert remediation.
