Is this black mold behind my wardrobe in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed these black speckles spreading along the wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. The room has felt really humid lately, and I'm worried it's gotten worse because we keep the curtains closed all day to block the heat. What's the best way to get this tested and treated properly in Dubai?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the black speckles behind your wardrobe are mold growth, likely Cladosporium or Aspergillus niger, which are extremely common in Dubai's climate. The combination of high ambient humidity, a lack of air circulation (from the closed curtains and the wardrobe being flush against the wall), and potential temperature differentials creating condensation provides the perfect environment for mold proliferation.

The first step is to not disturb the area. Do not attempt to clean it with bleach or other DIY solutions, as this can aerosolize the spores and spread them. The underlying cause must be addressed; otherwise, the mold will return. In Dubai, this is almost always a moisture issue. The persistent humidity you've felt confirms this. The wall could be a cold bridge where condensation forms, or there could be a hidden plumbing leak from an adjacent bathroom.

A professional inspection is absolutely necessary. We use thermal imaging cameras to identify temperature differentials and moisture meters to quantify the water content within the wall. Air and surface sampling are then conducted to identify the species and concentration of mold spores. This is critical for determining the correct remediation protocol, as per UAE health and safety guidelines and the standards set by the Dubai Municipality.

For proper treatment, the affected area must be contained under negative air pressure to prevent cross-contamination. The contaminated materials will be safely removed, and the area will be treated with professional-grade antimicrobial agents. Finally, a hygro-thermal assessment should be done to recommend solutions, such as improving ventilation or installing a dehumidifier, to prevent recurrence.

Given the potential health risks and the complexity of proper remediation, I strongly recommend you contact a certified professional. For a comprehensive inspection and a Dubai-specific remediation plan, you can call Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
