Is this black mold causing my child's cough?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of fuzzy black spots growing behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom, which shares a wall with our kids' room. The recent humidity has been terrible and I'm really worried because my youngest has had a persistent cough and runny nose for the last three weeks that won't go away. Is this definitely black mold and could it be making my child sick, or am I overreacting?

Based on your description, the fuzzy black spots behind the wardrobe are highly characteristic of mold growth, and the species Stachybotrys chartarum, commonly referred to as "black mold," is a strong possibility. The conditions you've described are a textbook case for mold proliferation in Dubai: a poorly ventilated, cool space created by year-round AC, coupled with the recent period of extreme humidity, leads to significant condensation on cold walls, especially behind large furniture items. This moisture provides the perfect environment for mold to feed on organic materials like dust, drywall, and even the wallpaper paste.

The health concerns are valid. Mycotoxins and mold spores released into the indoor air are known irritants and can trigger allergic reactions and respiratory issues. A persistent cough and runny nose in a child are common symptoms of exposure. While it is difficult to state with 100% certainty that the mold is the sole cause without a professional assessment, the correlation between the discovery and the ongoing symptoms is a significant red flag that should not be ignored.

Self-remediation is not advised, as disturbing the colony can aerosolize a high concentration of spores throughout your home. UAE regulations, particularly from the Dubai Municipality, have strict guidelines for indoor air quality and proper remediation protocols to ensure complete removal and prevent recurrence.

I strongly recommend a professional inspection and testing. Our certified team at Saniservice can conduct a thorough assessment to identify the mold species, determine the spore count in your indoor air, and pinpoint the exact moisture source. We will then provide a detailed remediation plan to safely remove the contamination and implement solutions to prevent future growth.
