Is this black mold causing my family's cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and we just can't shake it. I started looking around our villa in Jumeirah and found a patch of black, fuzzy mold behind the wardrobe in the master bedroom, probably from a slow leak in the AC condensation pipe. We’ve been sleeping in this room the whole time. Is this definitely the kind of black mold that causes serious health issues, or am I overreacting?

Based on your description, it is highly plausible that the black mold growth behind your wardrobe is contributing to your family's persistent cough. The continuous exposure in a sleeping environment, where you spend 6-8 hours nightly, is a significant concern.

In the UAE's climate, with its high humidity and year-round reliance on air conditioning, condensation leaks from AC drain lines are a primary cause of hidden mold growth. The "black, fuzzy" patch you describe is characteristic of a mold colony. While the term "black mold" is often associated with Stachybotrys chartarum, which can produce mycotoxins, many other black-colored molds (like Aspergillus niger or Cladosporium) can also cause severe allergic reactions and respiratory irritation, such as chronic coughing, especially in children.

You are not overreacting. Disturbing the mold by moving the wardrobe may have already released a large number of spores into the bedroom air, exacerbating the symptoms. DIY cleaning is strongly discouraged as it can aggravate the problem and lead to cross-contamination.

A professional inspection is critical. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters, thermal imaging, and air quality tests to identify the full extent of the infestation, including within the AC system itself, and pinpoint the exact species. This is essential for developing an effective remediation plan as per Dubai Municipality guidelines for healthy housing.

For immediate action, I recommend contacting our team at Saniservice. We can schedule a comprehensive inspection and provide a certified remediation protocol to safely remove the mold and address the underlying moisture issue.
