Is this black mold causing our cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and we just can't shake it. I finally pulled out our large wardrobe in the bedroom and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold on the wall behind it, probably from a small AC leak I fixed ages ago. I'm really worried their cough is connected and that we've been breathing this in. How dangerous is this type of mold and should I take my family to a doctor for a check-up immediately?

The black mold you found is very likely contributing to the persistent cough. Mold releases spores and microscopic particles that are respiratory irritants, causing coughing, congestion, and worsening allergy symptoms, especially in children.

In the UAE's humid climate, this is a common issue. The wall behind the wardrobe created a perfect micro-environment: a cold surface from the AC, trapped moisture from the repaired leak, and no airflow, allowing mold to flourish unseen. The continuous operation of AC systems can then circulate these spores throughout the room.

While the term "black mold" is alarming, many common species appear black. The specific health risk depends on the type (e.g., Cladosporium, Aspergillus, Stachybotrys) and the individual's sensitivity. For children with a prolonged cough, a doctor's visit is prudent to rule out other causes and get appropriate treatment. Inform the doctor about the mold exposure.

Do not attempt to clean a large patch yourself, as this can aerosolize a high concentration of spores. Disturbing it risks spreading the contamination further. For a growth of this significance, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can properly assess the extent, identify the species through lab analysis to understand the risk, and execute a safe containment and remediation protocol that addresses the root moisture problem, not just the visible growth.
