Is this black mold causing our health issues?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black speckles growing along the corners of our master bedroom ceiling, right near the AC vent. My husband has had a constant stuffy nose and a cough that won't go away for the last month, and I'm starting to worry it's connected. I tried wiping it with bleach but it came back after a few days. Is this the dangerous kind of black mold we hear about, and should we get a professional test done or just ask our building management to handle the leak?

The black speckles near your AC vent are likely mould, and your husband's persistent symptoms could definitely be connected. In Dubai's climate, AC units create constant condensation, and ceiling leaks from upstairs units or poor insulation are common sources of moisture that mould needs to grow. Wiping with bleach only removes surface discolouration; it doesn't address the moisture source or the root structure, which is why it returns.

While the term "toxic black mould" is often overused, any mould proliferation in a living space can cause health issues like the sinus congestion and cough you described, especially in individuals with allergies or asthma. The only way to identify the specific species is through professional air and surface sampling analysed by a microbiology lab. This analysis determines the actual health risk and guides the correct remediation method.

You should first notify your building management about the leak, as addressing the moisture source is the absolute first step. For a case like this with recurring growth and connected health symptoms, a professional inspection is recommended. They can identify the full extent of the contamination (which often spreads inside the ceiling void) and provide documented evidence for your building management. Look for a provider that offers independent lab testing to verify the results, as this removes any doubt about the findings.
