Is this black mold causing our illness in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. I’ve been waking up with a stuffy nose and a headache for the past month, and my husband has a persistent cough that won’t go away. The AC unit is in the hallway right outside this room. Is it possible our symptoms are from this mold, and what’s the safest way to get it cleaned here in Dubai?

It is possible your symptoms are related to the mold. The timing of your respiratory issues—stuffy nose, persistent cough, headaches—aligns with common reactions to mold exposure, especially in a confined space like a bedroom where you spend hours breathing the air. The Dubai climate creates ideal conditions for this; high humidity and constant AC use can lead to condensation inside walls, particularly near units, creating hidden dampness that fuels mold growth.

Black, fuzzy patches are a definite cause for concern and should not be ignored. "Black mold" is a broad term, but several species that appear this way can produce irritants and allergens. The only way to confirm the type and potential health risk is through professional testing, which involves taking a sample for lab analysis.

For a patch of that size and given your symptoms, professional remediation is strongly advised in Dubai. DIY cleaning with bleach or vinegar often fails to address the root moisture problem and can aerosolize spores, potentially worsening your exposure. Professionals will contain the area, use HEPA filtration to capture spores, safely remove the contaminated materials, and, most critically, identify and rectify the source of the moisture—likely a condensation issue from the nearby AC or a minor leak.

Your first step is to contact a reputable indoor environmental professional for an inspection. They can assess the extent of the problem, identify the moisture source, and recommend the appropriate remediation protocol. Ensure the company you hire provides verifiable before-and-after testing to confirm the spore count has been returned to safe levels. Resolving the underlying humidity or leak is essential to prevent it from returning.
