Is this black mold dangerous and can I clean it?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Mirdif for about two years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots spreading along the wall behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It’s been extra humid lately and I’m worried because my husband has started waking up with a stuffy nose and itchy eyes. Is this type of mold especially dangerous, and should we get a professional company to handle it or can we clean it ourselves safely?

Black mold growth behind furniture in a humid climate like Dubai is a significant health and property concern. The type you describe—black and fuzzy—could be Stachybotrys, often called "toxic black mold," but many other common black-colored molds like Cladosporium or Aspergillus can also cause the symptoms your husband is experiencing, such as congestion and itchy eyes. Only a lab analysis can confirm the species and its potential for producing mycotoxins.

Given its location behind a wardrobe, the extent of the growth is likely larger than what's visible. The wall cavity itself may be affected. In Dubai's high humidity, this often stems from a combination of condensation from AC units and a lack of air circulation behind large furniture.

For a small patch (less than one square meter), you could clean it yourself with a solution of detergent and water, wearing an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. However, scrubbing can aerosolize spores, potentially spreading them and worsening the problem.

For this scenario, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They will identify the moisture source (like a hidden condensation leak or rising damp) and assess the full extent. Without fixing the root cause, the mold will return quickly. Remediation involves containment to prevent spore spread, safe removal of affected materials, and HEPA vacuuming. A company with its own microbiology lab can provide the crucial before-and-after testing to verify the space is truly clean and the specific irritants have been removed. This is the most reliable way to resolve the health symptoms and protect your home.
