Is this black mold dangerous and how to clean safely?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since we got back from summer vacation, and I just found patches of black, fuzzy mold behind their bedroom dresser which is against an exterior wall. We’ve lived in this Jumeirah villa for 5 years and never had an issue until after all that unexpected humidity last month. Is this the dangerous kind of black mold and how do I clean it safely with my family still in the house?

The black patches you found are likely Cladosporium or Aspergillus, which are the most common types behind furniture on exterior walls here. These molds thrive on the condensation that forms when our humid outdoor air meets the cool interior wall surface from constant AC use. While not the infamous "toxic black mold" (Stachybotrys), these species are significant allergens and are almost certainly the cause of your children's persistent coughing and irritation.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself with bleach or other household products. Disturbing it will aerosolize the spores, potentially worsening the respiratory issues for your family. The priority is to contain the area. Keep the children out of the room, close the door, and if possible, run an air purifier with a HEPA filter nearby to capture any airborne spores.

For a situation of this size with health symptoms already present, professional assessment is strongly advised. The remediation process involves isolating the area with plastic sheeting, using HEPA-filtered air scrubbers to create negative pressure, and safely removing the contaminated materials. The underlying cause—the condensation on the wall—must also be addressed, often by improving insulation or adjusting AC settings to better manage humidity. A reputable local company with a microbiology lab can test a sample to confirm the species, which informs the remediation protocol and provides you with documented results for your peace of mind.
