Is this black mold dangerous and how to remove it?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of fuzzy black spots spreading along the base of the wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. It's the wall that faces the outside, and we had a small leak from the AC condensation pipe a couple of months ago that we thought we'd dried properly. Is this the dangerous kind of black mold and what's the proper way to get rid of it for good, not just wipe it off?

The black spots are likely Cladosporium or Alternaria, common moulds in Dubai that thrive on the humidity from AC condensation leaks. While not the infamous "toxic black mould" (Stachybotrys), they can cause significant respiratory irritation, allergic reactions, and worsen asthma, especially in bedrooms where exposure is prolonged.
The proper removal is critical because wiping it spreads spores. For a growth this size, caused by a previous leak, professional remediation is strongly advised. The leak likely left moisture inside the wall cavity, which is why the mould returned. DIY cleaning with bleach or vinegar only addresses the surface and will fail. The process should start with a moisture meter inspection to find any residual dampness inside the wall. The affected drywall may need to be cut out and replaced. Remediation involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores during removal, and applying professional-grade antimicrobial solutions. Merely spraying a disinfectant is insufficient. In Dubai's climate, the root cause is always moisture. After remediation, ensure the AC condensate drain line is fully cleared and functioning to prevent recurrence. Keeping indoor humidity below 60% with a dehumidifier or well-maintained AC is essential for long-term prevention. For verification, a post-remediation test can confirm the space is truly clear. |
