Is this black mold dangerous for my son?« Back to Previous Page

Our family villa in Jumeirah has this weird black speckled stuff growing along the bottom of the walls in two bedrooms. It’s gotten a lot worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago, and now my youngest son is sneezing constantly. How quickly do I need to get a professional to deal with this, or is it something I can handle myself with a bleach solution this weekend?

Based on your description, the black speckled growth is highly likely to be mold, and given the timing with increased humidity and the onset of your son's sneezing, it should be treated as a potential health concern. In the Dubai climate, high humidity and year-round air conditioning create ideal conditions for mold proliferation, particularly in areas with condensation or water intrusion. The constant AC use can cause thermal bridging and cold spots on walls, leading to condensation that mold thrives on.

The presence of respiratory symptoms like persistent sneezing is a significant indicator that the mold is already affecting indoor air quality and could be exacerbating allergies or asthma. Certain types of mold, such as Stachybotrys chartarum (often referred to as "black mold"), can produce mycotoxins and are particularly concerning for immunocompromised individuals and children.

Attempting a DIY remediation with a bleach solution is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and concrete, often only bleaching the surface color while leaving the root structure intact. More critically, improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, significantly increasing their concentration in the air and potentially worsening your son's symptoms.

This situation warrants an immediate professional inspection. A certified mold inspector will conduct air and surface sampling to identify the species and concentration levels, which is critical for determining the appropriate remediation protocol. In the UAE, reputable companies like Saniservice follow strict guidelines for assessment and containment to ensure the mold is safely and completely removed.

For the health of your family, I recommend you contact professionals immediately. You can reach our team at Saniservice for a comprehensive inspection by calling 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or emailing hello@saniservice.com.
