Is this black mold in my AC making us sick?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making my kids and me cough and feel congested for the last couple of months. I pulled the vent cover off yesterday and saw black dust and what looks like fuzzy black spots all over the inside of the duct. What’s the best way to get a proper mold inspection done to see if this is the cause of our health issues?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that you are dealing with a significant mold contamination issue within your AC system. The black dust is likely a combination of dirt and mold spores, while the fuzzy black spots are active mold colonies. The symptoms you describe—coughing and congestion—are classic indicators of exposure to poor indoor air quality, often caused by microbial growth in ventilation systems, a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and year-round reliance on AC, which creates constant condensation.

A proper mold inspection is not a simple visual check. It requires a certified professional to conduct a comprehensive assessment. This includes a visual inspection with specialized tools like borescopes to see deep inside ducts, moisture mapping to identify the source of the condensation feeding the mold, and, most critically, professional air quality testing. This involves collecting air samples from inside the duct, the supply vent, and the ambient room air to identify the types and concentrations of mold spores present. This scientific data is essential to confirm if the levels inside your home are elevated and to directly link the contamination to your health symptoms.

In the UAE, remediation work should comply with standards like the DM Guidelines and best practices from organizations like the IICRC. Attempting to clean this yourself is not advised, as it can aerosolize a massive amount of spores and exacerbate your health problems.

For a definitive diagnosis and a remediation plan, I strongly recommend you contact a certified professional.
