Is this black mold in my storage cupboard dangerous?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks now, and I just pulled their winter clothes bin out from the storage cupboard under our stairs in Jumeirah. I found a bunch of fuzzy black spots on a few sweaters and the wall behind them. It smells really damp in there. Is this something I need to get professionally cleaned like, tomorrow, or can I handle it myself with vinegar this weekend?

Based on your description, this is a situation that warrants immediate attention and likely a professional assessment. The combination of a damp smell, visible growth on both fabrics and the wall, and your children's persistent respiratory symptoms strongly suggests a mold issue that has progressed beyond a simple surface clean.

The black, fuzzy spots could be one of several common mold types found in Dubai, including Cladosporium or Aspergillus, which are known to cause coughing and allergy-like symptoms, particularly in children. The under-stair cupboard is a classic problem area; it's a confined space with little air circulation from your AC, allowing humidity from our coastal climate to condense and create a perfect environment for mold. The winter clothes likely absorbed this ambient moisture.

While vinegar can kill some surface mold, it is not effective on porous materials like drywall or for addressing the root moisture problem. Cleaning the sweaters yourself risks dispersing a high concentration of spores throughout your home every time the bin is moved, potentially exacerbating your children's coughing. The wall behind needs to be inspected for moisture penetration or condensation, which is a common issue in UAE villas.

For your family's health, the safest approach is to have a professional inspect the area. They can identify the moisture source, contain the area to prevent cross-contamination during cleaning, and properly remediate the wall. They can also advise on whether the textiles can be salvaged with specialized cleaning or must be discarded. In Dubai, reputable remediation companies should be able to provide documentation of their methods and, if needed, before-and-after air quality or surface sampling to verify the space is safe. Handling this yourself risks inadequate cleanup and ongoing exposure.
