Is this black mold making my child sick in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our kids' bedroom has been leaking a bit, and now we're seeing these black speckles on the wall behind the bed. My youngest has had a runny nose and a cough for over a week that just won't clear up, and I'm starting to panic. We're in an older building in Deira and the humidity lately has been awful. Is this definitely black mold and who should I call to get it tested properly in Dubai?

Based on your description, there is a high probability that the black speckles are mold growth, likely of the Stachybotrys chartarum type (commonly called "black mold") or another toxigenic species, given the confirmed moisture source from the AC leak and the high ambient humidity in Deira. The persistent respiratory symptoms in your child are a significant concern, as they are a classic indicator of exposure to mycotoxins and mold spores, which can exacerbate allergies and asthma.

The leaking AC unit creates a perfect microenvironment for mold: constant moisture, organic material (dust), and the ideal temperature. This is a common issue in Dubai's climate, where year-round AC use and high external humidity lead to condensation problems, especially in older buildings where drainage systems may be compromised.

You should not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the mold without proper containment can aerosolize a massive amount of spores throughout the room, drastically increasing exposure. UAE regulations, particularly from the Dubai Municipality, have specific guidelines for indoor air quality and mold remediation that must be followed by certified professionals.

You need a professional inspection and testing service immediately. A certified inspector will conduct air and surface sampling to identify the species and concentration of mold, which is critical for determining the correct remediation protocol and for medical professionals if your child's symptoms persist.
