Is this black mold making my family sick?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It's on the wall facing the outside, and we've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it after this last humid spell. I'm worried it's making us sick but don't know if this is something I can clean with bleach myself or if I need to call a professional company to deal with it?

Based on your description, this is a highly concerning situation that warrants immediate professional attention. The black spots behind the wardrobe on an exterior wall are a classic indicator of a condensation-related mold infestation, a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity levels and constant use of air conditioning, which can create significant temperature differentials between interior and exterior walls.
The persistent cough in your children is a recognized health symptom associated with prolonged exposure to mold spores, particularly from species like Stachybotrys chartarum (often referred to as "black mold") or Aspergillus. These spores become airborne and are inhaled, irritating the respiratory system. Self-treatment with bleach is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall, as it only removes the surface discoloration while leaving the root colony intact. More critically, improper cleaning can agitate the colony, causing a massive release of spores and mycotoxins throughout your home, drastically increasing exposure and potentially making the health symptoms worse. In the UAE, proper mold remediation is governed by strict hygiene and public health standards. A certified professional inspection is absolutely necessary. Our process involves using specialized equipment like borescopes to assess the wall cavity, moisture meters to identify the exact source of water intrusion, and air pumps to take spore samples. This identifies the species and concentration levels, which is critical for determining the correct remediation protocol. For the safety of your family, I recommend you cease use of the room and contact a professional company immediately. Our team at Saniservice is certified and equipped to handle this safely and effectively, in full compliance with local regulations.
