Is this black mold on my interior wall dangerous?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. The weird thing is, it’s on an interior wall, not near the bathroom or windows. I tried wiping it with vinegar but it came back after a few days. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call in a professional?

The black spots are likely mold, given the UAE's high humidity levels that create ideal conditions for growth even on interior walls. While the term "black mold" often refers to Stachybotrys, many dark-colored molds look similar. Most common household molds in Dubai aren't inherently toxic but can cause significant health issues, particularly irritation, persistent coughing, and worsened allergies or asthma, especially for children, elderly, or immunocompromised individuals.
The fact it returned after cleaning with vinegar indicates a deeper issue. Vinegar only addresses surface growth, not the root cause. In Dubai, mold on interior walls often stems from a hidden source of moisture. This could be a small plumbing leak inside the wall, condensation from an AC duct running through the ceiling or wall space, or even moisture wicking up from the slab foundation due to the region's high water table. The wardrobe itself traps humidity, creating a perfect microclimate. For a small patch (under one square meter), you can attempt remediation by wearing an N95 mask and gloves. Use a dedicated mold remover or a diluted bleach solution, scrub thoroughly, and ensure the area is completely dry. However, since it has already recurred, the moisture source is likely persistent and hidden. Professional inspection is strongly recommended in this case. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact, hidden source of water intrusion without unnecessary demolition. They can also take a tape lift sample for lab analysis to identify the species, which determines the precise health risk and required remediation protocol. Simply cleaning without fixing the underlying moisture problem will result in it returning. Resolving the root cause is the only permanent solution. |
