Is this black mold on my wall an urgent landlord issue?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the back wall of our walk-in wardrobe in Jumeirah. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and I'm worried it's been there a while because our clothes have started to smell a bit damp. Is this the kind of thing I need to get my landlord to fix urgently, or can I handle it myself with a cleaning spray from Ace Hardware?

This is likely an urgent landlord issue. The black spots spreading on an exterior wall combined with a damp smell on clothes strongly suggest a moisture intrusion problem from outside, which is the landlord's responsibility to fix under Dubai rental regulations. The damp smell indicates it's been growing for some time.
In Dubai's humid climate, exterior walls are prone to condensation issues, especially with year-round AC use creating temperature differentials. The root cause is almost certainly a leak in the building envelope or inadequate insulation allowing moisture penetration from outside. Do not attempt to clean this yourself with a spray. Surface cleaning won't address the moisture source, and disturbing it could release spores throughout your home. For visible spreading growth and a musty odor, professional inspection is needed to identify the moisture source and extent. Document the issue with photos and formally notify your landlord in writing immediately. They are obligated to address structural moisture problems. A proper fix requires identifying and sealing the external moisture entry point, then addressing any mold growth inside, which may involve wall cavity inspection. Temporary surface cleaning without fixing the leak will result in rapid regrowth. |
