Is this black mold urgent to treat in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I’ve just pulled their winter clothes out of the wardrobe in our spare room. I found a bunch of dark, fuzzy patches on the back wall and on a leather jacket. Our building is in Jumeirah and I know the humidity has been awful lately. How quickly do I need to get a professional in to deal with this black mold, or is this something I can handle myself this weekend?

Yes, this is urgent to treat. Dark, fuzzy patches in a humid climate like Dubai are a significant concern and should not be handled as a simple DIY project this weekend.

The combination of high humidity, which has been severe lately, and an enclosed space like a wardrobe creates the perfect environment for active mold growth. The presence of growth on both a porous material (the wall) and a semi-porous one (the leather) indicates a persistent moisture issue, likely from condensation or ambient humidity. Given that your children are already exhibiting respiratory symptoms like prolonged coughing, it is critical to address the source immediately to prevent further exposure and potential health impacts.

For a situation of this scale, a professional inspection is strongly advised. DIY cleaning with store-bought solutions often only addresses surface mold you can see, missing the hidden colonies within the wall cavity. This leads to rapid regrowth. A certified inspector will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the moisture source, assess the full extent of the contamination, and take air and surface samples for lab analysis to identify the mold species. This diagnostic step is essential, as it determines the precise remediation protocol required and confirms whether the species present are among the more problematic types commonly found in damp indoor environments.

The remediation process itself must be contained to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of your home during cleaning. Professionals use HEPA filtration and antimicrobial treatments to properly resolve the issue. To prevent recurrence, you must control the humidity in that room; this will likely involve using a dedicated dehumidifier, ensuring the AC is functioning correctly and set to a sufficiently low humidity level, and improving air circulation around the wardrobe.
