Is this black mold urgent to treat myself or professionally?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots spreading along the corner of our bedroom wall where it meets the ceiling. We're in a villa in Arabian Ranches and the room feels more humid than the rest of the house, even with the AC on. With the humidity coming back, how urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

Wall mold in a humid bedroom is a health concern and indicates a moisture problem that needs to be addressed. In Dubai's climate, with humidity returning, the issue will likely worsen without intervention.

For a small, surface-level patch (less than one square foot), you can clean it yourself. However, bleach is not recommended as it is mostly water and can feed future mold growth inside porous materials like drywall. Use a dedicated EPA-approved mold cleaner or a vinegar solution, scrub the area, and ensure it is completely dry. Crucially, you must identify and rectify the source of moisture. In your case, the corner where the wall meets the ceiling is a classic spot for condensation buildup from an improperly insulated AC duct running in the attic space.

Given the spread you describe and the persistent humidity, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can identify if the mold is only surface-level or has penetrated the wall cavity and pinpoint the exact cause, such as a leaking AC condensate drain pipe or insufficient insulation. Professional remediation ensures the mold is contained during removal and the underlying moisture issue is resolved to prevent rapid regrowth, which is very common with DIY methods in our climate.
