Is this closet mold dangerous for my coughing kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing at night and I just found a patch of black spots in the corner of their bedroom closet. It’s an internal wall and we’ve kept the AC on constantly this humid summer. What’s the fastest way to get this tested to see if it's the dangerous kind of mold?

It's very possible the mold is contributing to the coughing, especially at night when the room is closed and concentrations are higher. The constant AC use in Dubai's humidity creates a perfect environment for mold, as the cold interior walls can cause condensation inside the structure, particularly on internal walls and in closets with poor air circulation.

The term "dangerous" depends on the species. While the common black mold you often find (like Cladosporium or Aspergillus niger) is not typically toxic, it is a potent allergen and irritant. For children with developing respiratory systems or any predisposition to asthma, it can definitely trigger persistent coughing and congestion. More concerning species like Stachybotrys (true "black mold") are less common but require professional identification.

The fastest way to get a definitive answer is a professional mold inspection. An inspector can use moisture meters to find the condensation source and take an air or surface sample for immediate analysis at a microbiology lab. A lab culture is the only way to accurately identify the species and potential health risks, which is crucial when children are affected.

For a small, visible patch, you can carefully clean it with a vinegar solution, but this only addresses the symptom, not the hidden moisture problem. Given the location on an internal wall and the health symptoms, the underlying cause is likely condensation within the wall cavity, which requires professional assessment to prevent rapid regrowth. Prioritize finding and fixing the moisture source over just cleaning the visible mold.
