Is this closet mold in Dubai a DIY or professional job?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bedroom closet on the outside wall has developed these black speckles in the corners, and my clothes have started smelling a bit damp. It's gotten worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. I'm handy with tools but I'm worried the plasterboard behind might be affected. Is this something I can tackle with bleach and vinegar or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai?

Based on your description of black speckles on an exterior wall, a damp smell, and the recent humidity spike, you are almost certainly dealing with a mold colony. Given the climate in Dubai, where high humidity and constant AC use create significant condensation risks, this is a common issue, especially on exterior walls which can be thermal bridges.
While the surface may look like a simple cleanup, the mention of plasterboard is your critical red flag. Plasterboard (drywall) is porous and acts like a sponge for moisture. If the mold has penetrated behind the surface or into the material itself, which is highly likely, surface cleaning with bleach or vinegar is completely ineffective and can actually force the mold deeper. These DIY solutions only bleach the visible color; they do not kill the root structure (hyphae) or address the moisture source. The damp smell on your clothes confirms that spores are airborne and contaminating the contents of your closet. Attempting to clean this yourself risks inadequate containment, cross-contaminating other areas of your bedroom, and significant exposure to mold spores, which can cause health issues. According to UAE best practices for environmental health, any mold affecting porous building materials like drywall requires professional remediation. This involves: 1) isolating the area with containment barriers and negative air pressure, 2) safe removal and disposal of the contaminated plasterboard, 3) HEPA vacuuming and antimicrobial treatment of the cavity and framing, and 4) identifying and rectifying the source of the moisture, which could be condensation or a minor leak. For a proper assessment and to prevent structural damage and health risks, a professional inspection is absolutely warranted. I strongly recommend you contact our specialists at Saniservice. We can conduct a thorough inspection, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to determine the full extent and provide a certified remediation plan.
