Is this closet mold urgent in humid Jumeirah?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we keep our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of our building in Jumeirah. With this humidity, I’m worried it’s going to get worse fast. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or is it something I can handle myself with cleaning spray this weekend?

That's a classic presentation of mold growth in Dubai, and it's time for action. Given Jumeirah's high humidity and that the mold is on an exterior wall, this indicates a condensation issue, likely from the temperature differential between your air-conditioned room and the hot, humid outdoor air. The fact it's spreading means the conditions for growth are actively met.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Use a mild detergent solution or a mix of white vinegar and water—never bleach, as it only removes the color and can push spores deeper. Scrub the area, dry it thoroughly, and address the moisture source. This is a temporary fix if the underlying cause remains.

Given its location on an exterior wall, the urgency is moderate to high. The wall cavity itself could be affected, which you cannot see or treat yourself. A professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify if there's a hidden insulation or vapor barrier issue. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the condensation source. In many cases, improving ventilation or applying anti-microbial coatings is necessary to prevent rapid recurrence, which is almost guaranteed in our climate without addressing the root cause.
