Is this dangerous black mold behind my wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page
|
We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled patches spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. The AC unit is on that wall and it's been leaking a little, so I think the moisture is the cause. I’m wondering if I can just scrub it off myself with some bleach or if this is dangerous enough that I need to call a professional cleaning company?

Based on your description of black, speckled patches spreading on an interior wall with a leaking AC unit in Jumeirah, this is a high-probability case of mold growth, potentially including Stachybotrys chartarum (so-called "black mold"). The persistent moisture from the AC leak, combined with Dubai's high ambient humidity and the lack of airflow behind the wardrobe, creates the perfect incubator for mold.
This situation is considered serious and warrants a professional inspection. Disturbing the mold by scrubbing it yourself, especially with bleach, is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall, as it only bleaches the surface while leaving the root structure intact. More critically, scrubbing will aerosolize the mold spores, significantly increasing the risk of respiratory exposure and cross-contamination throughout your home. In the UAE, proper mold remediation is not just about cleaning; it's a controlled process governed by indoor air quality (IAQ) standards. A certified professional will conduct air and surface sampling to identify the species and spore count, contain the affected area to prevent spread, safely remove the contaminated building materials, and use industrial-grade HEPA filtration to clean the air. Simply wiping it away is an inadequate and potentially hazardous solution. Given the AC is the moisture source, the leak must be repaired by an HVAC technician to prevent immediate recurrence.
