Is this dangerous black mold in Dubai nursery?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing at night and I'm starting to panic. I lifted up the playmat in our nursery in Silicon Oasis today and found a bunch of black spots on the bottom and along the base of the wall behind it. It's been so humid lately and I think it's been spreading unnoticed for a while. Is this the dangerous kind of black mold and how do I get it properly tested here?

Finding black spots in a nursery is a valid reason for concern, but not all black mold is the infamous 'toxic black mold' (Stachybotrys). In Dubai's high humidity, especially with AC condensation and items on the floor trapping moisture, common molds like Aspergillus or Cladosporium are frequently identified. These can still cause the nighttime coughing and irritation you're describing in children, whose respiratory systems are more sensitive.
A proper test is the only way to know. Do not attempt to disturb it further, as this can release spores. In Dubai, you need a professional inspection that includes air and surface sampling. The critical step is that these samples must be analyzed by an accredited microbiology lab to identify the species and concentration. This lab report, not a visual guess, determines the actual risk and the required remediation method. For a nursery, I would strongly recommend this professional path. They can assess the wall cavity for hidden growth and the room's humidity levels. The remediation process for a confirmed case involves containment, HEPA filtration, and proper disposal to prevent spreading spores throughout your home. Look for providers who can present this full diagnostic-to-remediation process with documented evidence, not just a quick cleaning service. Managing indoor humidity below 60% with dehumidifiers and ensuring good AC maintenance are key long-term prevention strategies in our climate. |
