Is this mold an urgent health emergency for my kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the last couple of weeks and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled their wooden toy chest away from the wall in our Jumeirah villa and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading behind it, probably from the last time we had the AC serviced and it was leaking. How urgent is it that we get this professionally removed, like is this a call-the-landlord-right-now emergency or can it wait a few days?

The black mold you've found is a legitimate health concern that warrants prompt action, especially with children experiencing a persistent cough. Given the high humidity and constant AC use in Dubai, hidden condensation leaks are a common cause of this exact scenario.

While not a call-an-ambulance medical emergency, it is a call-your-landlord-today situation. Mold colonies can release spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) into the air, which are known irritants that can cause or exacerbate respiratory symptoms like coughing, congestion, and wheezing. Children are often more susceptible. The urgency is to stop their ongoing exposure.

For a patch described as "huge," professional remediation is strongly advised over a DIY attempt. Disturbing it incorrectly can aerosolize a massive amount of spores throughout your home. The landlord is responsible for fixing the source of the moisture—likely that AC leak you mentioned—and for the remediation itself. Document everything with photos and inform them immediately.

Before any cleanup, a professional inspection can identify the mold species and the full extent of the contamination, often using borescopes to see inside walls. This is critical, as what you see is often just a fraction of the total growth. Until it's handled, keep the area isolated, ensure good ventilation, and consider using a dehumidifier in the room. Resolving the moisture source is the only permanent solution.
