Is this mold and who should I call first?« Back to Previous Page

The ceiling in our master bedroom closet has these black splotches that we just noticed when putting away winter clothes. It's in the corner above the AC vent and the wall feels a bit damp. We've lived in this Jumeirah Park villa for about a year and it's never been an issue until now.
Is this definitely mold, and who should I call first to fix it properly, a regular handyman or a specialized cleaning company?

Based on your description, this is very likely mold. The combination of black splotches and a damp surface above an AC vent is a classic indicator. In Dubai's high humidity, condensation often forms on or near AC units, creating the perfect damp environment for mold to grow on porous surfaces like drywall.
You should call a specialized mold inspection and remediation company first, not a regular handyman. A handyman might simply paint over it or replace the drywall without addressing the underlying moisture source, guaranteeing the problem will return. The dampness suggests a potential issue with the AC drain line being blocked or the insulation around the vent being insufficient, causing condensation. A proper assessment involves identifying the moisture source, inspecting the extent of growth (which can be inside the ceiling void), and safely containing the area during removal to prevent spores from spreading. Reputable companies use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the full scope and can provide a lab analysis to confirm the mold type. This scientific approach ensures the root cause is fixed, not just the visible symptom. |
