Is this mold causing my kids' allergies?« Back to Previous Page

Our kids have been sneezing nonstop since we got back from summer vacation, and I just found a patch of black and green fuzzy stuff behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and we're in an older building in Jumeirah. We had a few really humid nights while we were away and I'm worried the AC might not have been set low enough. Could this mold be the reason for their allergies and what's the safest way to clean it with the kids around?

It is highly likely the mold is the cause. The visible growth behind the wardrobe and the timing of symptoms after returning to a closed-up, humid apartment are strong indicators. Molds release spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) that are common irritants, causing sneezing, runny noses, and congestion, especially in children.
In Dubai's climate, this is a frequent issue. The exterior wall you mention is a classic trouble spot. When the AC is set too high while away, the indoor air cools the wall surface. Outside, the extreme heat and humidity cause condensation inside the wall cavity, creating the perfect damp environment for mold to flourish unseen. For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can clean it yourself with care. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water, scrub the area, and allow it to dry completely. Ensure the room is well-ventilated during and after cleaning, and keep children away until the process is finished. Do not use bleach, as it can aggravate respiratory issues and often doesn't kill the roots. However, given the location on an exterior wall and the potential for hidden growth inside the wall cavity, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to assess the extent of the problem behind surfaces. For health safety during remediation with children present, a company with containment protocols and HEPA air scrubbers, like ours with IICRC-certified technicians, is crucial to prevent spreading spores throughout your home. The priority is to identify and fix the moisture source, which is likely condensation from the temperature differential. |
